Measuring curtains accurately is less about guessing a standard size and more about recording a few consistent dimensions. This room-by-room guide explains how to measure the window, choose rod placement, calculate fabric fullness, estimate finished length, and check unusual layouts such as bay windows and patio doors before you order.
Overview
The right curtain size depends on four decisions: where the hardware will sit, how much of the window the treatment should cover, how full the fabric should look, and where the hem should finish. Measure before choosing between ready made curtains and custom curtains, because a beautiful fabric will not solve a panel that is too narrow or too short.
For most rooms, measure in this order:
- Choose an inside or outside mount.
- Measure the window, recess, or opening at several points.
- Set the rod or track width, including any extra coverage beyond the glass.
- Choose a fullness factor and calculate the total fabric width.
- Measure from the planned hardware position to the desired hem.
- Compare the result with the manufacturer’s finished panel dimensions.
Write down every measurement in inches or centimeters, but do not mix units during a calculation. Record the smallest width and height when a recess is uneven. If you are comparing products, confirm whether the listed width describes one panel or the pair, and whether the stated length includes the heading or tabs.

How to estimate
1. Decide where the curtains will mount
An outside mount places the rod or track on the wall around the window. It is usually the more flexible option for living room curtains, bedroom curtains, blackout curtains, and layered treatments because the fabric can extend beyond the frame. Measure the window width, then add the desired overlap at the center and the amount of wall coverage on both sides. Check that the added width will not obstruct doors, switches, trim, or adjacent windows.
An inside mount fits within a window recess. Measure the recess width at the top, middle, and bottom, then use the narrowest measurement. Measure the recess height at the left, center, and right, using the shortest height if the sill is not level. Allow clearance for the chosen heading and hardware. Inside mounts can look neat, but they provide less space for a curtain to stack away from the glass.
2. Calculate the finished curtain width
First establish the coverage width: the distance the curtains must span when closed. For an outside mount, this is normally the rod or track’s usable width, not simply the glass width. Then multiply that coverage width by a fullness factor:
Total fabric width = coverage width × fullness factor
As a planning assumption, use about 1.5 times fullness for a restrained look, around 2 times for a balanced gathered appearance, and more fullness when the fabric and heading support a richer effect. Sheer curtains often benefit from more gathering, while heavy or textured fabrics may need less. The heading style also matters: pinch pleat curtains, grommet curtains, and tab tops do not use fabric in exactly the same way.
To estimate the number of ready made panels, divide the required fabric width by the width of one panel and round up:
Panel count = required fabric width ÷ width of one panel
For a pair of curtains, divide the total panel count between the two sides. If the result is an odd number, check whether a single center panel would look intentional or whether you should round up to create a symmetrical pair.
3. Calculate the finished length
Measure from the point where the curtain will hang—not automatically from the top of the window—to the intended endpoint. Add or subtract for the heading and any rings according to the product’s measuring instructions.
Common finished-length choices include:
- Sill length: finishes near the sill and suits areas where furniture or radiators limit the drop.
- Below-sill length: extends past the sill for additional coverage without reaching the floor.
- Floor length: finishes just above the floor or close to it, depending on the desired clearance.
- Breaking or puddling: uses extra fabric at the floor and requires more maintenance, especially in busy rooms.
For curtains over patio doors, measure from the rod or track to the floor and check the door’s swing, handle clearance, and threshold. A track mounted high and wide can make the opening easier to use, but the stacked fabric must not block the passage.

Measure the width in three places and the height in three places. Walls, floors, and window openings can be slightly uneven, particularly in older homes. For an outside mount, use the planned hardware position as the controlling dimension. For an inside mount, use the smallest recess measurement and verify that the hardware will fit.
Fullness is an estimate, not a universal rule. A curtain calculator can help with the arithmetic, but it cannot assess pattern repeats, fabric direction, shrinkage, lining, returns, or the space required for a specific heading. Always compare your calculated result with the seller’s instructions. Fabrics such as linen may have a relaxed appearance, while lined blackout or thermal curtains can be bulkier when drawn.
If the window is unusually wide, consider whether one long rod will sag or whether a center support will interfere with opening the curtains. For bay windows, measure each section and note the angles, corners, and available space for brackets. A flexible track, joined rod, or separate treatment for each bay may be more practical than treating the entire bay as one straight opening.
Worked examples
Standard living room window
Suppose the glass is 60 inches wide. You plan an outside-mounted rod that extends 6 inches beyond each side, giving a coverage width of 72 inches. With a 2-times fullness assumption:
72 × 2 = 144 inches of total fabric width
If each ready made panel is 50 inches wide, divide 144 by 50. The result is 2.88, so you would need three panels by the formula. However, an uneven panel count may not create a symmetrical pair. In practice, compare the appearance of two, three, and four panels, then follow the product’s stated recommended coverage. If symmetry and fullness are both priorities, four panels may be the more suitable choice.
For length, if the rod will sit 4 inches above the window and the floor is 96 inches below the rod position, a near-floor curtain would be ordered around that finished length, adjusted for the heading and the clearance you want above the floor.
Bedroom window with an inside mount
Imagine a recess measuring 38 inches at the top, 37.5 inches in the middle, and 37 inches at the bottom. Use 37 inches as the controlling width. With a 1.5-times fullness assumption, the estimated fabric width is 55.5 inches. If the product uses 28-inch panels, divide 55.5 by 28 and round up to three panels, then confirm whether that arrangement works with the product’s heading and center opening.
For a bedroom, also check whether the chosen lining or blackout construction increases the curtain’s weight or requires stronger hardware. A treatment that covers the glass but leaves gaps at the sides may still allow light through, so note the intended coverage before ordering.
Wide patio door
For a 90-inch patio-door opening, plan the rod or track around the full usable opening rather than the glass alone. Include enough return space for the curtain to clear the door when open, while keeping handles and the walking path unobstructed. Calculate fullness from the final track width, divide by the actual panel width, and check the stack-back space on both sides. This approach is more reliable than choosing a standard pair simply because the opening is a common door size.
When to recalculate
Recalculate whenever a basic input changes. This includes moving the rod higher or wider, switching from an inside to an outside mount, selecting a different heading, changing from single to layered curtains, or choosing a fabric with a different width. Recheck the figures if you add lining, interlining, a blackout backing, or a second layer of sheer curtains.
Measure again after installation of the rod or track if the hardware position differs from the plan. Revisit the calculation when replacing a window, changing flooring, adding a radiator or built-in furniture, or converting a window into a patio-door opening.
